Commenting on the live-air press conference held in Ankara between the Turkish foreign minister and his Greek counterpart, yesterday, Thursday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan commented, Friday, saying that his Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşolu arrested Nikos Dendias, "at his limit."
He said, "Greece still appoints the Grand Mufti, although it does not have that right according to the Lausanne Agreement, while we do not appoint the Patriarch," as he put it.
The two ministers' press conference yesterday in Ankara witnessed an altercation in which Davutoglu saw that the Greek foreign minister had made "unacceptable accusations" to his country regarding exploration in the eastern Mediterranean.
We chat or quarrel
"We refuse to accuse us of violating your sovereignty," he said, adding, "We will negotiate or quarrel according to your wish."
In turn, the Greek foreign minister replied to Davutoglu, saying, "You are violating international laws in the Mediterranean."
He also added, "We want to look at a positive future with Turkey without retreating from our positions," adding, "The European Union is not a third party in the equation, we are within the Union."
Developing relationships
Dendias said that the messages through the media contribute to escalating differences, and direct dialogue is more beneficial to the development of bilateral relations.
He also added, "We agreed in opinion to develop relations between the two countries."
On the other hand, Cavusoglu said, "We have dealt with the problematic issues that pose differences in the eastern Mediterranean. There will be a meeting on Cyprus of the 5 + 1 group of guarantor countries."
He continued, "Direct dialogue is a way to resolve the contentious issues with Greece."
