Lebanon: a settlement with the Central Bank to solve the fuel crisis and increase the transportation allowance

Lebanese Caretaker Prime Minister Hassan Diab announced a new settlement with the Central Bank of Lebanon to face the repercussions of the bank's decision to lift fuel subsidies, stressing that the settlement requires adopting the US dollar exchange rate for importing petroleum derivatives and paying the maintenance of electricity plants and services at a price of 8,000 pounds instead of the market price. Which amounts to 19,000 pounds, provided that the state bears the difference in loss in Lebanese pounds, in addition to raising the transportation allowance for employees.

This came in a statement by the caretaker prime minister, Hassan Diab, following a meeting in which he participated this afternoon at the presidential palace in Baabda, headed by Lebanese President Michel Aoun and in the presence of Banque du Liban Governor Riad Salameh and a number of concerned ministers.

In his statement, Diab stressed that the settlement would relatively ease the burdens and major repercussions of permanently removing fuel subsidies on people's lives, adding burdens that the Lebanese could not bear.

He added that this settlement is temporary, but necessary before the start of the school year and pending the start of the work of the financing card that the government is working to implement in early October.

Diab explained that a decision was made to pay a month's salary in two installments to all public sector workers, regardless of their job titles, as well as raise the value of the transportation allowance for employees to 24 thousand pounds for each working day.. Also, studying the possibility of the salary grant to later include workers in public institutions and municipalities.

He added, "We have agreed that the security forces, through the joint operations room, will be responsible for following up on the quantities of fuel from the moment they arrive in Lebanon until they are sold to citizens. Perhaps this prevents storage, monopoly and smuggling, and stops the suffering of citizens to obtain their needs of gasoline, diesel and gas without stopping." in queues."

He stressed that what is required today is that this settlement not be lost and that it be fortified with strict security measures and with the awareness of citizens and the commitment of traders to it.

Earlier this month, the Central Bank of Lebanon announced support for petroleum derivatives by pricing the dollar in import operations according to the dollar exchange rate in the market, which ranges between 18,000 to 20,000 Lebanese pounds, instead of the subsidized price estimated at 3900 pounds per dollar.
